Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; Minister of State (Independent Charge) Earth Sciences; Minister of State PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh will release ‘Vigyan Jattara’, the first popular monthly science magazine in Dogri, at Jammu University’s Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium on August 07. Vigyan Prasar is organizing the function under its ‘Vigyan Bhasha’ programme’, in collaboration with the University of Jammu and Central University of Jammu.

Studies have shown that learning in the mother tongue leads to a better understanding of scientific and mathematical concepts. The ‘Vigyan Bhasha’ programme aims to popularize science among children and general people in Indian languages. The idea behind a language-specific magazine of popular science is to ignite interest in science and inculcate scientific temper right from the formative age.

Teaching in the first language has been long seen as an effective tool to help students better understand difficult concepts, particularly in science and technology. While schooling in the mother tongue is vital for developing a better understanding of science and technology related subjects, school education alone is not adequate in a world of rapid development of science and technology research. It can get outdated very fast. Informal learning spaces such as science clubs, popular science books, science news in newspapers, and social media messages provide vast opportunities for growing and developing a scientifically aware society.

Vigyan Prasar has been working relentlessly to kindle interest in science among the masses using all possible physical and multimedia touch points. Public response to Vigyan Prasar’s efforts to promote science communication through regional languages has been immense and is growing steadily. In the future, Vigyan Prasar plans to reach every district headquarter with a series of field-level activities.
