Scientists discuss ethical issues on animal resources for experimentation

The ethical assessments related to the use of animals in scientific experiments are wide ranging. A national workshop was organised for the scientists and researchers at Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR)-Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), Chandigarh, to discuss about animal resources for experimentation and related ethical issues.

The workshop covered a wide range of topics related to the ethical and humane treatment of animals and their husbandry practices, biosafety, and occupational hazards. The workshop also harped upon the need to have proper training in handling animals and the biology of animals to avoid the stress encountered due to improper use of techniques.

The workshop is part of “Accelerate Vigyan” program of the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology (DST). This program strives to provide a big push to high-end scientific research and prepare scientific manpower which can venture into research careers and a knowledge-based economy.

The workshop organised virtually from 20th to 26th July 2021 at CSIR-IMTECH’s Centre for Animal Resources and Experimentation (iCARE), was focused on “Ethical Contemplation of Animal Resources for Experimentation”, says CSIR-IMTECH statement.

Dr Rajat Sandhir, Professor at Department of Biochemistry, Punjab University touched upon various animal models available for neurodegenerative diseases, in his keynote address.

Dr Sanjeev Khosla, Director CSIR-IMTECH discussed the importance and contributions of animal research in improving human health. A manual on “Basic Bio Methodology of Laboratory Animals” was released on the occasion.

“This workshop enables to increase employability and entrepreneurial potential of the participants in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical domain.” said Dr Neeraj Khatri, Head of CSIR-IMTECH’s Animal Facility.

The participants were evaluated throughout the seven day workshop through on spot assignments and e-poster presentation and the top three participants were felicitated with an Award of Excellence for WeCARE - 2021.

The faculty for the workshop were drawn from a panel of experts in the field of laboratory animal science from different organizations like PGIMER, TIFR, ACTREC Mumbai, Panjab University, Chandigarh, National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi, GADVASU, Ludhiana and CSIR-IMTECH.

CSIR-IMTECH is a national center for excellence in microbial sciences and was established in 1984. IMTECH’s vision and mission are to create a translational ecosystem strengthened by fundamental discoveries and to address unmet healthcare and industrial needs with state-of-the-art processes and platforms respectively.
