Bangiya Bijnan Parishad jointly with Vigyan Prasar and Gopal Chandra Bhattacharyya Bijnan Prasar Samiti will organize One Day State Level Seminar on 125th Birthday of Sri Gopal Chandra Bhattacharyya, on 1st August, 2019 in the auditorium of Bangiya Bijnan Parishad for initiation of the yearlong programmes to celebrate Gopal Chandra Bhattacharyya’s 125th Birth Anniversary. We are aware that 1 August, 2019 will be the 125th birthday of Sri Gopal Chandra Bhattacharyya, Eminent Naturalist and Science Writer. Bangiya Bijnan Parishad, the dream child of Acharya Satyendra Nath Bose, is going to celebrate the 125th Birth Anniversary of Sri Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya in a befitting manner from 1 August, 2019 to 1 August, 2020. Sri Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya was the founder executive member of Bangiya Bijnan Parishad. We intend to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary through the yearlong programme among the common masses especially School, College and University teachers and Students throughout the West Bengal on Life and Work of Sri Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya with the emphasis on his contribution in dissemination of scientific knowledge through popular writings in Bengali for students and common masses, Nature study including behaviour of insects, contribution on propagating the Hand-on-Experiments, etc.
Though Sri Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya had no conventional degree in higher education, he published his first research papers in 1932, on life events in the body of plants, Subsequently, he also published work on bioluminescence and other botany topics, but gradually his interests shifted to entomology. He became an expert photographer, and photographed many varieties of ants, spiders, small bats and tadpoles. In total, he published 22 papers in English, including journals such as the Natural History of the American Museum of Natural History. He joined Bose Institute in the year 1921 as Research Assistant under Prof. Jagadish Chandra Bose. He won the Ananda Puraskar for Bengali literature in 1968, and the highest award for Bengali literature, the Rabindra Puraskar, in 1975. In 1981, the University of Calcutta awarded him an honorary Doctor of Science degree less than three months before he died. About fourteen books and 800 articles in different popular science and other journals were written by Sri Gopal Chandra Bhattacharyya in Bengali. Acharya Satyendra Nath Bose made himself available in the area of science-society interface through propagation and dissemination of science education among masses through mother tongue. Acharya Bose emphasised that unless one cultivates science through his own language, he will neither be able to grasp it nor to apply it. From this farm conviction he along with other eminent personalities including Sri Gopal Chandra Bhattacharyya founded Bangiya Bijnan Parishad. Sri Gopal Cahndra Bhattachryya was the founder Executive Committee Member of Bangiya Bijnan Parishad. He was assistant editor of Jnan O Bijnan from July, 1948, joint editor with Dr. Prafulla Chandra Mitra from April, 1949 and editor from February, 1950 upto March, 1977.
Bangiya Bijnan Parishad have planned for yearlong programme to celebrate the 125th Birth Anniversary of Sri Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya starting from 1st August, 2019 through various programmes like One State Level Seminar, Seminars on Life and Work Of Sri Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya along with hand on experiment in Schools in all Districts of West Bengal, Publication of one Book on Work and Life of Sri Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya written by selected writers, Publication of Special Issue (May, 2020 issue ) of “Jnan-O-Bijnan” on Sri Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya, Different Competition (Essay writing, Extempore speech, Quiz, Seminar Competition) among school students (VIII — XII) during June — July , 2020.
