Shri Sharad Dutt has been associated with Electronic Media for more than Four decades. He Chaired the Jury of National Film Awards, 2013 for Best Writing in Indian Cinema and Assocham National Council on M&E for 8th Annual Summit on Media & Entertainment, 2014. 

Shri Dutt worked as Officer on Special Duty to Directorate General: Doordarshan (2006-2007), Doordarshan Bhawan, New Delhi. As a Director of the Kendra, that too of the Delhi Doordarshan, he managed the major & intricate assignments which included VVIP recordings (like President, Prime Minister, Foreign leaders) & recordings of Independence Day & Republic Day, Mega OB’s (live as well as Recordings) with renowned dignitaries, Evening Live shows & other day to day coverage’s. Besides this he was actively involved in important recording, which he conceived, executed & directed. As a Director he is well known to give platform to best talent, to record intellectuals & thinkers & as a genuine Film Maker tried to contribute something worth.

His prestigious recordings included live telecast of Independence Day & Republic Day from the last 33 years; major live telecast of then Russian President Mr. Gorbachev, Mr. Nelson Mandela’s Former President Bill Clinton & Former President Gen. Pervez Musharraf’s visit to India; centenary celebration of Pandit Jawahar lal Nehru.

Hehas produced more than 100 Documentries on many eminent personalities from almost all the personalities like Dr. Mulk Raj Anand, K.L Saigal, Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachhan, Pankaj Mallick, Nirad C Chaudhri, Dilip Kumar, J Krisnamurthy, Amitabh Bachaan, Amrita Pritam, Dev Anand, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Aktar ul Iman, Dom Moreas, Nobel Laureate Seamus Heamy, Shiv K Kuma. Special Documentary (India Civil Services) on civil service day 2006 which was screened at Vigyan Bhawan in the presence of Prime Minister Dr. Man Mohan Singh. Directed “ The Movable Feast”-“France through the eyes of an Indian” (Co-Production with French Television). Interview based Programme with Lady Margaret Thatcher on her visit to India. Produced more than 20 programmes on Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru & Mrs.Indira Gandhi. Series of 26 episodes “World of Nature” with Khushwant Singh. Produced Doordarshan’s first colour film “Thunderbolts” (first Aerobatic team of Indian Air Force) and hundreds of other programmes and series.

Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh has had two decades of experience in the field of journalism and more than a decade long experience as a media academic.

As a media professional he has worked in positions like Political Editor, Associate Editor, Executive Editor, Assistant Editor, etc., and regular columnist in well- known newspapers such as the Hindustan, the Nav Bharat Times, the Jansatta, the Dainik Bhaskar etc., besides being editor and regular contributor to many journals and magazines.

In the field of academics, Prof. Singh has held senior positions such as Vice-Chancellor, Director, Professor, Senior Professor and Visiting Professor.

A winner of Sahityakar Award (2002-2003) and Harmony Award (1997) for noteworthy contribution in the field of Hindi Journalism. Prof. Singh has also represented India in prestigious ‘International Leadership Visitor Programme in the United States in 2007′ and addressed a prestigious gathering of senior journalists at International Press Centre, New York.

A Doctorate from JNU, he has also served as a Vice-Chancellor of Patna University, Bihar, India from August, 2011 to August, 2013. He has also been the Visitor’s nominee for a few Universities and the Chancellor’s nominee for another few. He has served as Member of Selection Committees for senior faculty positions in various other universities/academic institutions. Also he has been Member of Curriculum Design Committees, Finance Committees etc., of Central / State Universities.

He has a more than thousand articles to his credit in national dailies, magazines and journals. Prof. Singh has been Key resource person for many workshops and chaired many seminars on media, media literacy and communication conducted by organisations such as UNICEF, UNESCO, UGC, Discovery Channel, etc.

He has been associated with National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) as member/ expert of peer team for assessment of universities and resource person for training the assessors.  He was a Member of Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) of Ministry of Minority Affairs.

He has also served in various Committees like Advisory Panel, Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Media for Science & Environment, Hindi Advisory Committee, Task Force on Broadcasting Services Regulation Bill and the Content Code, Core Committee on Standardisation of Media Education-an initiative by Press Council of India for development of National Media curriculum framework, Evaluation Committee of Central Hindi Directorate, M.H.R.D. GOI to select outstanding books (published) for “Education Award (Shiksha Puraskar)”.

He is the founder Director and Professor, School of Journalism and New Media Studies, Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi. He has set forth the vision, mission and road map which included Centres for Research & Repository and Professional Training, a Standing Media Congress to reflect on all issues that pertains to media in South Asia besides academic cooperation /collaboration with international institutions of repute. 

He initiated as a Director of SOJNMS of IGNOU certain MoUs / MoAs with UNESCO; Deutche Welle, Germany; Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA); Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC), etc.

Presently he holds the position of the Director in the School.

    Earth Matters his Environmental & wildlife educational TV series telecast on DD National and DD Network in Hindi & other languages reaches 800 million people across India weekly through DD National. The programme has been going on for almost 13 years. The progrmme has led to formation of over 4000- Earth Matters Nature Clubs in rural areas across India.

Dr Harsh Vardhan to release book on Indian scientists and a compendium of science news on 12 March 2018

A new book on inspiring moments of leading Indian scientists titled ‘Indian Scientists- The saga of Inspired Minds’and will be released by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Hon’ble Minister of Science & Technology (S&T), Earth Sciences (ES) and Environment, Forest and Climate Change (EFCC) on 12 March 2018 at a function to be organized at the India International Centre in New Delhi.

The book has been published by Vigyan Prasar, an Autonomous Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. This path-breaking book has been written by leading science writers. It includes glimpses of inspiring moments from the lives of 54 eminent Indian Scientists and Technologists across the entire gamut of disciplines and eras. The catalog includes some very renowned scientists like Homi Jahangir Bhabha, Jagdish Chandre Bose, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, Satyendra Nath Bose, Satish Dhawan, APJ Abdul Kalam, Har Govind Khorana, Raja Ramanna, Meghnad Saha, S Chandrasekhar, Birbal Sahni, Ruchi Ram Sahni, Vikram Sarabhai, M Visvesvaraya and so on.

These scientists personified excellence along with dedication and wisdom that played a pivotal role in shaping modern India and thus the insights presented in the book are invaluable. This initiative of Vigyan Prasar also highlights the values and ethos that these great minds stood for and it has been taken with the hope that it sets the context for renewed optimism about science and technology pursuits, essential to tackle multiple challenges and optimize on human, natural, institutional and other resources.

The occasion of release of this book by Dr. Harsh Vardhan is also being leveraged by him to interact with  associates and relatives of some of the scientists featured in the book whom he has invited to learn more about the lives & times of these great souls. Thus the book launch will be followed by a panel discussion with these special invitees who will also interact with the media.

On this occasion, the Minister will also release a compendium of science news articles syndicated by India Science Wire (ISW) during 2017. The compendium included 425 original news stories in English and Hindi produced by India Science Wire and published in Indian media outlets. These news articles that highlight some of the unique & novel research work done in Indian research laboratories, academic institutions and universities which also will be another landmark in science communication & popularizing domain.


8th National Science Film Festival, 2018 begins at Gauhati University

Gauhati University, Feb 20: “Nature is our mother and she is in danger. It is high time that we take appropriate action to save her”, said noted wildlife film maker and environmentalist Dr Mike Pandey while addressing the gathering during the inaugural session of the eighth National Science film festival at P.D Hall of Gauhati University. He also emphasized on the importance of each and every organism in maintaining the ecological balance and the role of science films in creating awareness. Dr. Mike Pandey graced the occasion as Guest of Honour.
The five-day film festival is being organized by Vigyan Prasar , DST, Govt of India in collaboration with the Department of Communication and Journalism, Gauhati University.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Nimish Kapoor, Festival Director and head of the science films division said, “We must think and act scientifically for all round development. Promoting scientific temper is one of our fundamental duties as mentioned in the constitution of India. We had started the journey of National Science film festival in 2011 when we had to try hard to get movies but now we receive numerous movies from across the country and abroad which is a great advancement”.
Dr Mridul Hazarika, Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University in his presidential remarks said, “Imagination of each individual is multifaceted and it is shown in the movies. More number of movies will take scientific temperament to a newer height”.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, Director of school of New media studies, IGNOU, New Delhi said, ‘Science films can simplify the concepts of science and help in communication to the common people. Choosing a university as the venue of the event was the best decision because Universities host young minds that are the future of the nation.’
Prof. Manoj Kumar Patairiya, Director of CSIR-NISCAIR, New Delhi while delivering the Keynote speech said, “This festival has brought together a galaxy of science communicators and there would be enormous exchange of ideas. Surely many new ideas will emerge in the process”. He also stressed on the importance of scientific temperament in resolving conflicts in the society.
Registrar of Gauhati University, Dr S. K. Nath while delivering welcome address of the inaugural session, spoke about the importance of science communication and wished a grand success for the festival. Dr Ankuran Dutta, Head of the department of the Department of Communication and Journalism, Gauhati University, while delivering the vote of thanks, emphasized on the glorious fifty years of media education in North East.
The NSFFI Festival Book was also released in the inaugural ceremony. Later, on the occasion of NSFFI 2018,  ‘GU Times’, a leading community newspaper of India was formally released by Dr. Pradeep Srivastava, an eminent Scientoonist & Former Dy. Director, CSIR-CDRI in his session of Master Class on ‘Bionics: Enormous scope for science film making in India’.
On the first day, 16 competitive films- Category A has already been screened along with two master classes and one panel discussion successfully. Altogether 82 shortlisted films under five categories that include the films sponsored by government and non-government institutions/ organizations, films made by independent filmmakers/ production houses, films made by college students, films made by school students and films from other countries will be screened respectively in NSFFI 2018. Moreover, 17 foreign films from the countries like US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Norway, Switzerland and South Korea will be screened in the following days.

Around 300 filmmakers, as well as students of different institutes from all around the country and abroad are participating in this mega event.

Mr Nimish Kapoor is a science communicator and scientist working in Vigyan Prasar, an autonomous organisation of the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India from last 14 years. At present he is heading Science Films Division of Vigyan Prasar. His work profile includes designing, planning & coordination of national and international science film festivals and capacity building programmes on various aspects of S&T communication. He designed a series of national workshops on science film making for budding film makers and ICT based workshop ‘Cinema in Classroom’ for teachers to promote science films in school education. These workshops are nurturing young talents in the arena of science film making. Actively involved in programmes to promote science film culture and science film education and capacity building in the country, he has been part of decision-making bodies of Doordarshan Directorate General, New Delhi; CSTT-MHRD; CIET-NCERT; CMS Vatavaran Film Festivals; Central Hindi Directorate, TERI, NCSTC-DST etc. and associated as resource person and guest faculty in many institutions.

Earlier to Vigyan Prasar he has been associated with various television channels as anchor, writer, reporter and producer. Associated with launching team of ETV UP, a regional channel of Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad; produced & directed approx. 1000 hours television programmes for ETV Network (2001-2004); research and reporting for science and society based TV programmes DASTAK and India’s Most Wanted aired by ZEE TV (2000-2001); anchored evening live shows of DD National, talk shows of DD Kisan and written scripts for scientific and environmental themes for fiction and non-fiction programmes aired by Doordarshan & All India Radio; scripted documentaries for Discovery Channel (1998-2001). Presented / moderated live science programmes on All India Radio-News Service Division, national & international broadcasts, FM Gold, FM Rainbow etc. Science films (scripted) were aired by DD National, DD Lucknow and science radio plays aired by Vividh Bharati. Regular contributor of popular science articles to Vigyan Pragati, Avishkaar and Kurukshetra (monthly magazines). Chapters and review papers on various aspects of science communication have been published in national and international journals / books.

Mr Kapoor got recognitions in the field of popular science & environmental communication: (i) Gold Medal 1997 by Lucknow Christian College (ii) Dr. Gorakh Prasad Memorial Award 2000 by Vigyan Parishad Prayag (iii) ISWA National Award 2001 by Indian Science Writers’ Association, New Delhi (iv) Bioved Best Journalist Award 2010 by Bioved Society (v) Vigyan Chetna Samman 2012 and 2013 by Vigyan Chetna Samiti, Uttar Pradesh (vi) Vigyan Parishad Centenary Award 2013 by Vigyan Parishad Prayag (vii) Distinguished Service Award 2013 by the Society of Biological Sciences and Rural Development, Allahabad.

Dr. Sanghmitra Suryapaniis working as an Academic Officer (Biology) at National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), Noida.Dr. Suryapani has her PhD in Botany from JamiaHamdard, University New Delhi.She has also done diploma in Environmental law and management from Indian Law Institute, New Delhi. She is a Subject Matter Specialist (SME) for Science and Technology at the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) platform for Swayam. She is also a State Coordinator, Mizoram for Diploma in Elementary Education (D. El. Ed) programme for in-service untrained teachers launched by NIOS an initiative of Ministry of Human Resource Development.She has developed self learning material of biology at Senior Secondary level. In addition to that she prepared learners guide for secondary, Science and Technology and developed various audio programmes through Muktavidyavaniand video programs for MOOCs at NIOS.

Dr. Sanghmitra Suryapani has also contributed to public service by actively participating in various committees such as Member of Evaluation committee titled “Research for harnessing the potential and experience of S & T Councils in Eco WaSH Science & Technology Communication for meeting Emerging Needs”, Ministry of Science and technology and also involved in Terminology Standardization Meetings’ in Botany glossary as an Expert/Resource person ,Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology, Min. of HRD, New Delhi.

She was a Resource Person for NCERT, CBSE, Vigyan Prasar and IGNOU. Earlier to NIOS she has been associated with All India Radio for many years as an anchor, Script writer and delivered Science talks and also participated in various discussion forums for All India Radio (AIR). She has represented at various national, international and corporate platforms for writing and presenting talks.

Mr Shailendra Dhar started off with documentary film making in 1995, specifically with the genre docu-fiction, filming wide range of experiences; from life of destitute children in cities like Delhi to video-graphing life and times in conflicts areas in North East and Central India. He has made over 300 short films and video reportage on impact of armed conflict in life and societies, on role of culture and science in evolving value system in society.

He worked for Doordashan, generating video stories for them from North Eastern states and contributed for the first ever audio visual news programme Newstrack by TV Today. He later joined Anand Bazaar Patrika’s television wing as Bureau Chief in Delhi.Ever since he has worked with different audio visual news organisations. He was Output Editor with ETV and was Editorial Head for Nepal’s leading news and views television channel ‘Nepal 1’.

Proficient in computation and software design and programming, having worked few years, working with top technology firms like Nasscomm associated Disha and Rdac India as President software; he has traversed the intersections of science and society, and experienced and expressed the seamless intermingling of science into lives, believes and practices of people.He is executive director of Amyglobal Media, a media content provider and management company which caters to media outlets globally.

An M.Tech in Applied Geology from IIT-Roorkee, Shri UtpalBorpujari won the Swarna Kamal for Best Film Critic at the 50th National Film Awards of India in 2003.

As a professional journalist, apart from cinema, he has written extensively on politics, society, culture, literature, etc., while working with some of India’s top media houses. Since 2010, when he decided to turn a filmmaker, he has made several acclaimed documentary films that have been screened across the world in various film festivals. Among them are “Mayong: Myth/Reality” (2012), “Songs of the Blue Hills” (2013), “Soccer Queens of Rani” and “Memories of a Forgotten War” (2016).

Shri Borpujari has also served in international film juries as an erstwhile member of the International Federation of Film Critics, apart from having served on juries for National Film Awards and Indian Panorama. He has also curated films as well as served as a consultant for the Northeastern sections in the International Film Festival of India as well as various other film festivals.

His debut fiction feature, “Ishu”, is currently travelling to festivals and has been screened in the Kolkata International Film Festival, Smile International Film Festival for children and Youth (SIFFCY), 3rd Eye Asian Film Festival Mumbai, Canada Kids Film Festival till now and will be screened at Bangladesh International Children’s Film Festival (Dhaka) and Toulouse Indian Film Festival (France) in the coming months.

An educator, author and researcher with over 26 years of industry, academic and administrative experience, Dr Singh has been associated with Navbharat Times(Patna) Fairfax Business Media (Singapore), Discovery Channel(Delhi), Jagran Institute of Management and Mass Communication(Noida), ManavRachna International University (Faridabad), and IIMC(JNU Campus). At present he is Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication in GGSIP University, Delhi. His publications include:

Under his leadership, the School of Mass Communication bagged DNA-Stars of the Industry Awards for Innovation and Educational Leadership consecutively for two years: 2014 & 2015. He was invited to the prestigious Asia-Pacific Education Leadership Forum-2015 (Bali) that was attended by thought leaders from over 40 countries.

He has been on the committee/panel of experts of various academic institutions including NCERT, IGNOU, JNU, DU, NIOS and CEC (UGC).

As the MIS (Managing Information Strategies) Bureau Chief, he had the distinction of doing the Change Management Case Studies of the IT using majors such as the World Bank, UNICEF& NTPC that were up against the Y2K challenge posed by the year 2000. He also worked as Script Writer and Story Director of over 100 documentaries for Kashmir File (DD-CNN International) and Turning Point (Doordarshan).

An Economics graduate, he did his masters in Hindi Literature & Media Management, M.Phil in Sociology of Literature, and PhD in the domain of Journalism.
