Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Nano cannot be compared with GM as the applications of Nano are in multiple fields and most of the applications do not involve genetic modification.
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: It is more about using available properties at 10-9, rather than modifying them.
Alok Mukherjee: Nanoscale particles are likely to be more reactive and they may be able to penetrate human cells. Is there any evidence that the limited number of these used in cosmetics can cause any damage. I need to Know about the toxicity of nanoparticles with respect to damage to DNA or lungs.

Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Dear Mr. Mukherjee, your inquisitiveness towards the toxicity of nanomaterials is quite genuine and well-taken, but it is similar to saying that fire is always dangerous if it is not handled carefully.
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Even in normal conditions we inhale nanoparticles day in and day out. and only the very large amounts of nanoparticles of toxic character can actually be dangerous.

Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Dear Jagaanath, nano is currently used in solar cells, high storage batteries, devices for reducing the electrical loss in transmission, and also in creating solid light devices which uses negligible power and gives the same or enhanced output. For example we now have solar photovoltaic cells developed by Moser-Baer Photovoltaic in Greater Noida, India that use nanotechnology.
Gaurav Saxena: sir, I am planning to go US for higher study so how can we continue in US?
Alok Mukherjee: Two other matters of concern are Unstable arms race and nanofactories will be very easy to smuggle.

Advances in microelectronics have given us the electronics boom witnessed in the past 10 years. Now think of a mobile phone with the computing power of a supercomputer. Think of what all you can do with it.

Alok Mukherjee: Grey goo was an early concern of nanotechnology , that tiny manufacturing systems might run amok and ‘eat’ the biosphere, reducing it to copies of themselves. Grey goo with five capabilities integrated into one small package, Mobility , Shell ,Control); Metabolism , Fabrication . Does the concept realy stand today?

Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Vatsal, nano products are currently available in India ranging from UV protective skin creams, bacteria-resistant quilts, ultara-efficient water purification systems, very highly minimized transistors on chips (45 nm in size), solar photo-voltaic cells, refrigerators, washing machines enhanced using nanotechnology, paints, pigments and many other products.
B. Mohan: How it used? Whether it is a computer program written in any specialised chips Or any other ?
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: B Mohan, I’ve answered your question along with Alok in my last reply. In fact, Dr. Kalam has predicted much before we could think so far, and has reiterated that India must take a lead in this area, else we will be left behind.

Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Nano car is not based on nanotechnology, but the connotation of the word Nano in it’s reperesentation of something small has been used. Nanotechnolgy based paint that is extremely scratch-resistant is being used on 5 models of TATA cars.

Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Vatsal, a lot of state universities have already introduced nanotechnology at the college level. The CBSE is also planning to do so at the school level. Hence we foresee a large demand for nanotechnology teachers in the near future. In fact the NSTC has just launched India’s first and only Nanotechnolgy Teacher’s Training Programme – details available at www.nstc.in/programs

Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Dear Prof. Khan, Nanotechnology pervades all fields, ranging from Civil, to mechanical, electrical, computers, chemical, physics, textiles etc. Soon, all jobs will require nanotechnology as a pre-requisite, just as computers are a pre-requisite today.

Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Abhishek. The Indian Government has launched the Nanotechnology mission, Department of Science and Technology has launched various initiatives and funding to various universities. A number of DRDO labs are currently doing development and research in this area.

Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Guna, nanotoxicology is the science of the study of toxic effects of nanoparticles and nanomaterials on humans and animals since this particular area is not very well researched, and documented, hence exact data is not publicly available
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Madhu, some of the applications are: nano-enhanced washing machines, bacteria-resistant quilts, UV-resistant sunscreens, nano-silver-enhanced deodrants etc.
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Dear Prof. Khan: Nanotechnolgy is an enabling science. Hence instead of talking of the advantage of nanotechnolgy OVER other engineering disciplines, we prefer to talk about how nanotechnolgy enhances the applications of each discipline, and making each discipline of engineering more effective and efficient in terms of delivering products and services by incorporating latest breakthroughs in Nanotechnology.
