Shri Puneet Mehrotra: good afternoon nitu
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: and also a good afternoon to gaurav
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: please ask your questions one by one
nitu gupta: good afternoon sir
Amit Srivastava: i have heard about nanotechnology throgh web or newpaper
Gaurav Saxena: good afternoon sir
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: would you like to ask something about it?
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: about its applications?
Amit Srivastava: could it be profitable to indian industries?
Gaurav Saxena: i would like to know what is the scope of nanotechnology
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: We’ll start with Gaurav’s question
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: The scope of nanotechnolgy is quite vast
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: and currently it is estimated that it will
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: encompass almost all industries and current
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: technologies. The US Govt. estimation is that it
Gaurav Saxena: how is it beneficial for information technology industries
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: would be a trillion dollar industry by 2015. India is also poised to become a major player in nanotechnology
deepak reddy: Good Afternoon Sir,
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: by imbibing it in various sectors including healthcare, defence, infrastructure and textiles. deepak reddy: sir, what we study in Nanotechnology
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Amit, answering your question, yes indeed nanotechnology would be immensely profitable for Indian companies as it has the potential
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: and strength to give tremendous edge in terms of quality, pricing and applicability of various product.\ nitu gupta: sir may i knw what is the goal of NSTC?
deepak reddy: Hello Sir, i want to know the fundamental concept of Nanotechnology?
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Deepak, nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary science which is used in conjunction with biological. physical, chemical and many more allied sciences.
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Deepak, fundamentally, nanotechnology is the science of studying matter at 10-9 level that is a billionth of a meter level where
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: the properties of matter exhibit some wonderful characteristics which can be used by bottom-up and top-down approaches to create
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: useful products and technologies for the common man.
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: For example, you would have watched the Wimbledon recently. The tennis racquet used by Roger Federer is
deepak reddy: sir how it is uselful in Medical Science?
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: manufactured by a company called Wilson. The raquet is made up of a nanomaterial called a carbon nanotube
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: that allows the racquet to wheigh only 340 gms while being twice as strong.
Amit Srivastava: but sir where are the products made by nanotech?
Alok Mukherjee: Namaskar! Puneet Mehrotra Ji, Nice to have you for a discussion on this burning topic of Today ! Gupta: What are some of the products of nanotechnology?
Alok Mukherjee: Often viewed as a dream rather than a commercial prospect, DNA as a construction material in nanotechnology , Can it be applied in practice sooner than many expect?
nitu gupta: sir ,what are some of the products that can be used in daily life?
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Amit, currently, skin creams are using ZnO(nanosized) from Ranbaxy’s division Crosslands. Sunscreen creams use SPF (TiO2 nanoparticles).
Alok Mukherjee: Is ‘nano’ the next GM?
G S Guna: Good afternoon sir,
rahul: Sir, what are the subjects/topics that one studies when he or she goes for the M Tech/MSc courses in nano technology?
deepak reddy: sir, what are the current research in Nanotechnology
Amit Srivastava: Sir i am a software engineer , So i want to know the applications of nanotech in Software
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Dear Mr. Mukherjee, we did view it as a dream earlier, but now we see it as a reality because of developments in the areas of metrology and construction tools
G S Guna: What will nanotechnology bring us in the future?
rahul: Sir, I could not get the relation between metrology and nanotechnology?
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Nano cannot be compared with GM as the applications of Nano are in multiple fields and most of the applications do not involve genetic modification.
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: It is more about using available properties at 10-9, rather than modifying them.
Alok Mukherjee: Nanoscale particles are likely to be more reactive and they may be able to penetrate human cells. Is there any evidence that the limited number of these used in cosmetics can cause any damage. I need to Know about the toxicity of nanoparticles with respect to damage to DNA or lungs.
G S Guna: It is bit confusing please answer the questioner with name
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Rahul, we come to your question. We essentially study the relationship between the basic science and nanotechnology, the business aspects and also nanostructures, nanomaterials, and basic aspects of nanocharacterization. Visit www.nstc.in for similar non-university training programmes
G S Guna: Are there many businesses involved in nanotechnology?
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Dear Mr. Mukherjee, your inquisitiveness towards the toxicity of nanomaterials is quite genuine and well-taken, but it is similar to saying that fire is always dangerous if it is not handled carefully.
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Even in normal conditions we inhale nanoparticles day in and day out. and only the very large amounts of nanoparticles of toxic character can actually be dangerous.
G S Guna: Please answer my questions Sir,
rahul: Sir, is it really possible to see nano particles in the lab?
Amit Srivastava: Sir i am a software engineer , So i want to know the applications of nanotech in Software Development where memory management is so much metter
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Dear Mr. Guna Nanotechnology will bring prosperity to humankind by giving us solutions to our current issues which are not addressable by current technologies and knowhow, thus making the life of average human being more convenient.
Alok Mukherjee: CARBON NANOTUBES, thinner 10,000 times than a human hair ,consist of rolled up sheets of carbon hexagons. Can CNTs be used as minuscule wires or in ultrasmall electronic devices.
Gaurav Saxena: I am working as a HR professional so how is it helpful for me?
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: For example, water purification is attaining new standards using silver nanoparticles.
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Gaurav, as a HR manager, you will need to recruit people with knowledge of nanotechnolgy in large numbers very soon. Hence you will need a thorough grounding in this area.
G S Guna: Which government agencies are involved in nanotechnology?
nitu gupta: How Nano Technology is useful for a 10+1+2 standard student ?
P D : Dear Sir, there is any Nano research in hair transplation?
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Alokji and Amit, Carbon Nanotubes are currently being used in flash device memories as well as in electronic devices such as mobile phones, hard drives, data storage devices, motherboards.
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Amit, yoiu will soon be developing software for much higher computation rates, new computer architectures and unimaginable power
G S Guna: We see a lot of information about nanotechnology in the USA – where can I learn about our country’s programs?
Gaurav Saxena: sir, Can we join the distance program or we have to do full time
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Nitu, the CBSE is already in the process of introducing Nanotechnolgy into schools, because this technology is now the direction that all future development must take. Other state technical universitiies have already done so.
Alok Mukherjee: We Know that NANOPHOTONIC DEVICES , realizes extremely small and low power consumption optical devices, multiplexers (OADMs) with photonic crystals. for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM).. What are the use of nanophotonic technologies?
Amit Srivastava: Sir i am very interested in nanotech so where i can join these course and which orgnization providing

rajeev: what the real means of nano with technology
Admin: hello sir can nano help to make more environmentally friendly energy systems ?
Amit Srivastava: i have heard about the nstc which kind of organization is this.?
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Dear Jagaanath, nano is currently used in solar cells, high storage batteries, devices for reducing the electrical loss in transmission, and also in creating solid light devices which uses negligible power and gives the same or enhanced output. For example we now have solar photovoltaic cells developed by Moser-Baer Photovoltaic in Greater Noida, India that use nanotechnology.
Gaurav Saxena: sir, I am planning to go US for higher study so how can we continue in US?
Alok Mukherjee: Two other matters of concern are Unstable arms race and nanofactories will be very easy to smuggle.
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Mr. Guna. Nanotechnology has the power to change human life as we know it. Take an example. Advances in microelectronics have given us the electronics boom witnessed in the past 10 years. Now think of a mobile phone with the computing power of a supercomputer. Think of what all you can do with it.
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: NSTC is a unique nanotechnology platform that interlinks corporates, institutions, experts, students, Government and all other stakeholders at one platform to harness the potential of nanotechnology by collective means
rajeev: sir, ans my question
rajeev: nano used by some other topic also
rajeev: so, whats it’s value with technology
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Rajeev, the study of matter at the 10-9 scale is nanoscience. When this immense power is used to create commercially viable applications, it is called Nanotechnology.
G S Guna: What are the potential health and environmental impact on Nano Technology
Alok Mukherjee: Grey goo was an early concern of nanotechnology , that tiny manufacturing systems might run amok and ‘eat’ the biosphere, reducing it to copies of themselves. Grey goo with five capabilities integrated into one small package, Mobility , Shell ,Control); Metabolism , Fabrication . Does the concept realy stand today?
Alok Mukherjee: How would one set up a responsible recycling system for used nanoscale products and assure its effectiveness?
kalish: 10-9 scale , means standard
kalish: or something else
Shri Puneet Mehrotra: Alokji, although I would really like to answer your questions, it would be very difficult to do so on this forum. Hence, I would again request you to e-mail your questions to me.
