Postal Department unveils two commemorative stamps to mark the 250th anniversary of Survey of India

Department of Post has brought out two commemorative stamps of Survey of India to mark its 250 th anniversary. The stamps are of denomination of Rs. 5 and Rs. 15.

The Rs.5 denomination stamp depicts the emblem of India’s central engineering agency in charge of mapping and survey and the Rs. 15 denomination stamp depicts a Thedolite, the precision instrument for measuring angles in the horizontal and vertical planes, without which no mapping or survey can be complete.

Union Minister for Post, Manoj Sinha, unveiled the commemorative stamps in the presence of Union Science and Technology Minister, Harsh Vardhan.

A team led by Surveyor Radhanath Sikdar measured Mount Everest in 1852 and came up with a height of 29,002 feet. Modern measurements indicate the height to be little more at 29,037 feet.

Headquartered at Dehradun, the Survey of India has 18 civil engineering divisions ranging from the prediction of sea tides to aerial surveys. It has 23 Geo-spatial Data Centers spread across India, each catering to the respective administrative area. (India Science Wire)
